"LODE WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of LODE who died in the service of their country
Fourteen in the Great War of 1914-1919 and six in 1939-1945

In 1922 a grant was obtained to remove and set back part of the front of St. James' churchyard wall, the space being then available for the war memorial. The memorial, a granite Celtic cross, was unveiled on 4th March 1923. A granite Celtic cross on a square tapering plinth on a two stepped base, the area is backed by a semi-circular wall. On this wall the original capping was removed and replaced by stone pieces inscribed with the dedication and the names of five men who fell in 1939-145.
Warrant Officer Douglas Frost R.A.F. is not named on the Lode War Memorial, but is placed in the parish on the 2nd World War Book of Remembrance in Ely Cathedral.

The inscription on the front face of the plinth reads:-

THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW
PARISHIONERS TO THE REVERED MEMORY OF THE MEN
OF THE PARISH OF LODE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR
1914-1918
then in two columns the names, seemingly in no particular order:-

around the top of the wall the inscription reads in a single line:-

TO THE REVERED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF LODE WHO FELL IN THE WAR + 1939-1945 + LEONARD AYRES + HARRY HATLEY + NORMAN HOWARD + SIDNEY PERRY + DAVID SHIPP

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
